Internship Project & Portfolio Management and Project Controlling 80-100%

Zurich | 80-100% | Reference 8378

SIX runs the infrastructure behind the Swiss and Spanish financial markets: exchanges, post-trade, financial information and banking services. Every year, SIX invests a substantial budget in projects that shape that infrastructure. Our team makes sure that money goes to the right places, delivers what was promised, and gives the Executive Board a clear view of the whole portfolio.

We are rebuilding how SIX manages its project portfolio. This includes a new framework for allocating investment capital, sharper decision formats for the Executive Board, and new ways to fund fast-moving initiatives such as AI. This is a period of active redesign, not maintenance. You will join a small, senior team in the middle of it. This internship is limited to 6 months.

What you will do

  • Run the monthly project controlling close. As closing manager, you coordinate actuals, forecasts and variances across the portfolio, and you challenge the numbers before they reach management.
  • Build the portfolio view for senior management. You prepare reporting, dashboards and briefing material for the Executive Board and its committees. That means turning data from dozens of projects into a few messages a decision-maker can act on.
  • Work alongside the Portfolio Manager and project controllers on project reviews: Is the business case still valid? Are budget, scope and timeline realistic? What should leadership know that the status report doesn’t say?
  • Shape the methodology. You help design and test new templates, decision criteria and governance formats, and you see them used in real investment decisions.
Find smarter ways to work. You use data analysis, Excel and modeling, and AI tools to automate reporting and surface insight faster. Good ideas get implemented.
  • Take on a defined analytical project of your own, for example benchmarking how other FMIs and banks allocate capital, or analyzing what has driven cost and schedule overruns in our portfolio. You present your findings to the team leadership at the end of your internship.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s student, or recent graduate, in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Industrial Engineering or a related field, with a strong academic record
  • A genuine interest in corporate finance, strategy and how large organizations make investment decisions
  • Strong analytical skills: you are comfortable in Excel, can build a clean model, and know that a number without a story is useless
  • Clear writing and visual thinking: you can compress a complex situation into one slide
  • Rigor and reliability: You will be handling numbers that management relies on, and you notice when something doesn’t add up.
  • Initiative: you suggest improvements rather than waiting to be asked
  • Fluent in German and English
  • Prior experience in consulting, audit, banking or corporate finance is a plus, not a requirement
